As you may have heard, on August 18th the Obama Administration announced an effort to better focus enforcement resources on people who are the highest priority for deportation. The Administration intends to use prosecutorial discretion to administratively close deportation proceedings, or decline to start them in the first place, for low-priority individuals. Low priority groups singled out in the announcement include veterans, students who were brought to the U.S. as children, same-sex spouses, people with serious disabilities or health issues; women who are nursing or pregnant; and victims of domestic violence or other serious crimes.

It is important to note the prioritization scheme announced by the Administration is NOT an amnesty. The headquarters-level panel announced by the President will conduct case-by-case reviews. More specifics about implementation of the prioritization plan have not been provided yet.
